Caren was the Executive Director of the Oprah Winfrey Foundations in the 2000s when the Oprah Winfrey Show was on the air, and then served as president of Crown Family Philanthropies in Chicago. She started Croland Consulting to help high-net-worth families and businesses develop philanthropic practices in line with their values. Her focus is on governance, cross-generation engagement, strategic planning, and evaluation.
Caren currently chairs the board of the Poetry Foundation in Chicago and is a member of the Board of Visitors at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and the Women’s Philanthropy Institute. She is a board member of the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance and a frequent keynote speaker and podcast guest. She is a partner in Entertain2Educate, a production company focused on ethics in the workplace. She is adjunct at the University of Chicago Booth School in their Private Wealth Management Program and at the Spertus Institute in Chicago where she teaches workshops on resource development and strategic planning and is a faculty member at the Ultra High Net Worth Institute.
Caren has a degree in broadcast journalism from Emerson College and a certificate in nonprofit strategic leadership from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. Caren enjoys coaching, mentoring, and working alongside people who believe they can make the world a better place.
