Founder, I Be Black Girl
Ashlei Spivey is a bold leader with a passion for empowering her community, challenging inequities, and creating sustainable systems change. In her work as a community organizer, philanthropist, and activist, she is a champion for racial equity and other intersections.
She is a graduate of Jackson State University and attended University of Texas Arlington for her master’s program. She boomeranged back to Omaha eight years ago, after losing her mom, to care for her sister, Yaasmyn. Since moving back, Ashlei has worked to bring racial equity to the work happening in the city where she was born and raised. She has spent the last decade of her professional career working in spaces from workforce development to equity and inclusion.
Ashlei is the creator of I Be Black Girl, 2019 ABFE Connecting Leaders Fellow, and currently works as a program officer at Peter Kiewit Foundation. She is the first Black woman/person to hold this role. Ashlei also proudly serves on the ACLU of Nebraska board of directors.
Ashlei has been recognized as a 2018 Midlands Business Journal 40 Under 40 recipient, The Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce 2018 YP Changemaker; 2018 Omaha Women’s March Keynote and 2019 Ten Outstanding Young Omahan. I Be Black Girl has also won two awards including the NAACP 2019 Partner of the Year Award and 2019 Urban League Nebraska YP of the Year Award. Most importantly, Ashlei is a mom, daughter, friend, and neighbor.
